Raccoon eyes is essentially periorbital ecchymosis and is an important physical exam finding to recognize. Raccoon eyes are a sign of basilar skull fracture or a subgaleal hematoma. Some cancers, ruptured meninges, and recent craniotomy can also cause this. The mechanism by which this forms is the blood products from the skull fracture infiltrates into the soft tissue around the eyes.
